My Fibre Speeds
NBN Fibre connections are available in 4 speeds
Speeds stated are Theoretical Network Maximum Speeds.
Click Here to find out what factors can effect the actual speed that you get on your connection.
They are:
Fast - up to 12Mbps downstream & 1Mbps upstream
Faster - up to 25Mbps downstream & 5Mbps upstream
Fastest - up to 50Mbps downstream & 20Mbps upstream
Super Speed - up to 100Mbps downstream & 40Mbps upstream
What’s all this Up & Down business? When you look at a webpage or receive an email of photos this is download – the information you are getting is traveling down from the internet to your computer. When you send an email of photos to someone else – that is upload – the information is traveling up from your computer to the internet.
Relative time to download an email of photos
Fast - up to 12/1 Mbps
Faster - up to 25/5 Mbps
Fastest - up to 50/20 Mbps
Superspeed - up to 100/40 Mbps
Relative time to upload an email of photos:
Fast - up to 12/1 Mbps
Faster - up to 25/5 Mbps
Fastest - up to 50/20 Mbps
Superspeed - up to 100/40 Mbps
Unlike ADSL copper based connections, the Fibre speed is much closer to the stated or nominal speed.
For example an ADSL 2+ copper connection is nominally (or has a theoretical network maximum speed of) 24Mbps/ 1Mbps - but you wouldn't ever see that speed (unless you lived next door to the exchange & they threw a cable through the window for you!) With Fibre - the speed is more likely to be quite close to the stated (or nominal/ theoretical network maximum) speed. What speed do I need?
That's entirely up to you of course.
Probably the two biggest determining factors are:
What do you use the connection for? For things like streaming media & on-line gaming, the faster the better really. But even our 12/1 connection is fast enough for most needs
How impatient are you? The higher your impatience level, the faster connection speed you should choose!
